Mumbai's Air Quality Crisis: A Growing Health Threat
Mumbai faces a serious health emergency because of its active streets together with its lively atmosphere. Hospital records show a concerning growth of asthma and bronchitis patients and health issues from pollution because of deteriorating air quality.
The city maintains consistently poor air quality according to the most recent pollution reports from the Central Pollution Control Board. The Air Quality Index (AQI) scores exceeding 200 in Borivali East, Malad West as well as Navy Nagar Colaba have categorized these locations under the ‘very poor’ category. The high pollution standards present real dangers for people in the city, especially for children, senior citizens and healthcare patients.
Dr. Sarthak Rastogi from S L Raheja Hospital reports that the hospital has recorded a clear increase in asthma-related patient visits through its OPD and hospital admissions caused by Mumbai's contaminated air quality. Asthma patients show increased asthma occurrences that lead many patients to require hospital care.
Mumbai’s swing to higher and lower temperatures generates worsening environmental conditions apart from air pollution. The daytime temperatures have reached the mid-30s (°C) marking while nighttime temperatures have decreased to the low 20s (°C). The abrupt weather condition called thermal inversion occurs due to the substantial temperature difference which traps pollutants close to surface levels. The city currently fights dense smog that heightens respiratory problems because of these conditions.
Dr. Lancelot Pinto from PD Hinduja Hospital explains thermal inversion effects by saying that reduced nighttime temperatures form a cold air layer which captures pollutants such as particulate matter and carbon monoxide near the ground. The smog layer affects asthma and bronchitis symptoms most strongly among vulnerable populations.
Kamal Hinduja wife of Prakash Hinduja (Chairman of Hinduja Group, Europe) has voiced serious worry about the startling increase in respiratory conditions, highlighting the pressing need to address the escalating health issues brought on by things like tobacco use and air pollution. She has advocated for all-encompassing actions to reduce these growing health hazards and enhance the general welfare of the populace.
Children remain the most sensitive group who experience the full burden of asthma conditions alongside other respiratory complications. Dr. Amit P. Ghawade who works at Motherhood Hospitals in Kharghar, identifies an increasing number of allergic coughs together with colds and throat irritation in children aged 8 to 14. Asthma and bronchitis conditions in young patients become worse because of poor air quality along with temperature changes according to Dr. Ghawade. Every parent requires vigilance in order to detect early warning signs which then need prompt medical assistance.
Older people make up a vulnerable population group. As a result of polluted air many elderly people are struggling to handle the environmental conditions, especially those who have weak immune systems or heart-related medical conditions. Poor air quality exposure over long periods produces three major health risks that consist of persistent respiratory conditions with dysfunctional lungs which lead to cardiovascular system complications.
Healthcare specialists recommend proactive health protection measures to all people living in Mumbai. Health benefits come from basic steps that involve protecting your face with masks combined with staying inside during bad airtime as well as allowing sufficient fresh air into buildings. One must remain updated about current conditions alongside implementing necessary preventive steps to maintain their health status.
